"...an epic, life-changing journey…"

Mountain to Mouth - Geelong’s extreme arts walk - was a glorious experience on May 6 -7, 2016.  This was the second time we created the arts walk as a downhill journey along the 80 kilometre contemporary songline forming from the top of the You Yangs to the mouth of the Barwon River.  M~M2016 was extreme, it was bold, it was innovative and it was blessed with two days of perfect autumn weather.

It began in 2011 in response to the bushfires that devastated the Kinglake Ranges and Whittlesea area. Into The Light provided a way for the community to look forward and welcome new growth. Meme was Artistic Director of the first Into The Light event. This video shows the essence of that first event and was made by artist Stefanie Robinson, Arts Project Coordinator, Community Cultural Development, City of Whittlesea.

Mouth to Mountain 2009

Mouth to Mountain 2009

"Inspiration for creating a contemporary ‘songline’ came from the land. It came in answer to the question of what connects us as a community? Starting thousands of years ago in Aboriginal cultures, songs and chants were created as a way of mapping this country, as a way of navigating from one place to another. The idea of an arts journey from the mouth of the Barwon River to the top of the You Yangs was inspired by this idea of mapping - connecting communities through performance, artwork, dance, music, visuals and stories. M~M 2009 was the journey made from dawn to dusk by over 2,000 people on May 9th, 2009 across the City of Greater Geelong and a team of artists with the ear and the insight for creating beauty in unknown spaces."   Meme McDonald - Artistic Director
