The idea of following the migration path of the Eastern Curlew has traveled with me, offering new challenges across the years.
The third expression of the Eastern Curlew's journey was A YEAR ON THE WING, an on-line documentary again following the migration path from the breeding grounds in Siberia through to the southern wetlands of Manukau Harbour in Aotearoa/New Zealand Ð this time online.
It was inspiring to team up with Nell White and Kate Clere again on this production.
Nell, Kate and I worked as a team to create WADERBIRDS, so we had a long history together following the
flightpath of the Eastern Curlew.
It was Nell's idea to create the online documentary.- A Year on the Wing.
At the time, in 2004, this was new territory and one of the first of online documentary of its kind
produced in Australia. Nell invited me to co-write and Kate Clere to direct this exploration into new media.
Is that the end of the story with the birds? I'm not sure. What I am sure of is my gratitude for the idea that dropped from the sky that day by the bay so many years ago. May there always be wetlands to rest in and birds to fly.
